Lyrical dance is a union of jazz and ballet techniques that creates a half way point between the two genres. Contemporary dance is a combination of elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and ballet. Contemporary dance is often done barefoot and can be performed to many different styles of music.

Lyrical and contemporary dancers develop physical, spatial, mental, and emotional awareness, while matching the mood and lyrics of the music. The more a dancer can channel his or her emotions and utilize them in the dance, the more the audience can feel the heart of the dancer. Emotions drive lyrical and contemporary dance. Without the inclusion of the emotions the dance would be void and empty.

Dancers taking this class will also be trained in weight sharing, where the dancers will use their own body weight to lift and support each other. Skills such as balance, flexibility, and breath control will be developed by the dancers to improve their technique.

Italia Performing Arts offers a class combining lyrical and contemporary dance in Winchester and in Edinburg.
