What to Expect: Student Policies
At Italia Performing Arts, we take the art of dance seriously. Our programs provide students with classical training in the arts, and as part of embracing and honoring the spirit of dance, we expect our students to abide by certain standards.
Our student expectations include:
- Respect
- Commitment
- Skills
- Attitude
- Attire
We also expect students to abide by the following school policies.
Attendance
Dance, especially ballet, is a demanding art form. For this reason, we require students and their parents to register for classes and encourage them to commit for a minimum of one year.
Students are expected to arrive 15 minutes before the start of class in the uniform required for their class. Parents are requested only to drop their children off (as we do not have space for them to wait in the reception area). Any student arriving more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted to class. Students are encouraged not to leave the room once class has begun. Please allow for appropriate restroom use prior to class.
Absences
Students are encouraged to attend every class. If a student will not be able to attend class for any reason, please let us know as early as possible (by telephone at 540-504-7263 or by email at studio@italiapa.com).
If the reason for an absence is known in advance, we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice. If the reason is unforeseen, such as sickness or weather conditions, we still request that you contact us and let us know. We don’t want to wait for students who are not on their way, and sometimes we can rearrange classes if several students are not expected.
If a student is absent more than once with no good reason given, we will contact the parents.
Classroom Etiquette
Classroom etiquette begins with respect and creating an atmosphere of determination in which students can excel. It is expected that students will show respect for their teacher as well as for their fellow students.
Be On Time for Each Class
Students are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of class in the uniform required for their class. For ballet, girls’ hair should be properly fixed in a bun as requested. Classes will begin promptly at the scheduled time.
Follow Instruction
In keeping with the art of dance, students are expected to listen and respond to teacher instruction, abstain from inappropriate language, and show a cooperative and respectful attitude at all times. Any disruptive behavior will be corrected immediately
Show Self-Control
Discipline and self-control are essential qualities for Italia Performing Arts students. Teachers reserve the right to ask any student who does not respond appropriately in the classroom or who disrupts a class to leave for that day. If any student has to be excluded in this way for a third time, the school principal will schedule a direct consultation with parents to address the child’s behavior before the child is invited to return to class.
Uniform Rules
All students are required to be in full uniform (leotards and elastic belts must be purchased directly from Italia Performing Arts, in the studio; shorts and tights are also available) for classes.
Dance uniforms include dress, hairstyle, and appropriate shoes. Details for each style of dance are as follows.
Ballet – Girls
Attire:
- Pre-Primary and Primary: white leotard, white tights, pink shoes
- Ballet Basics: burgundy leotard, white tights, pink shoes, elastic belt
- Ballet Pro A & B: light blue leotard, white convertible tights, pink shoes, elastic belt
- Ballet Intermediate: black leotard, white convertible tights, pink shoes, elastic belt

Hair:
- If a student’s hair is not long, it must be adjusted to look as uniform as possible with the rest of the class.
- Girls are required to wear their hair in a bun for ballet classes. For instructions, see How to Make the Perfect Ballet Bun.
Ballet – Boys
All boys studying ballet are asked to wear tight-fitting white t-shirts with tight, black athletic pants and black ballet shoes.
Tap, Lyrical, Modern, Jazz, Acro, & Musical Theatre
For all of our classes except for ballet, the uniform is basically the same. The only exception is footwear.
Attire:
- Body wear for girls: black leotard and tan tights
- Yoga pants or shorts may be worn over tights and leotards; all dancers must be able to easily move in pants if they are worn.
- For Acro, dance or bike shorts are required over leotards, tights should be footless or convertible, and hair should be worn in a low bun.
- Body wear for boys: white t-shirt and tight, black athletic pants
Footwear:

- Lyrical & Modern: bare feet; socks may be worn when instructed by the teacher
- Jazz: black jazz shoes

Class Cancellations & Make-Up Classes
Occasionally we must cancel classes due to weather, teacher sickness, etc. We do NOT automatically cancel our classes when public schools are closed.
We will announce any closures by email and on our Facebook page. If there is a last-minute closure, we will attempt to call you. You can also call our studio at 540-504-7263.
When classes have been canceled, students are entitled to make-up classes. We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate make-up classes for cancellations or when a student has been absent with advance notice given. Absences with no advance notice given are not entitled to make-up classes.
Evaluation & Testing
Italia Performing Arts monitors all students to ensure they are advancing in the proper disciplines and techniques. It is expected that all students will participate in this.
Some ballet students will be invited to be assessed at our studio or formally examined at another venue by examiners of the Cecchetti Council of America.
Acro students may be invited to take part in Acrobatic Arts examinations.
Tuition & Fees
At Italia Performing Arts, we encourage students to commit to at least one full year of classes. No contract is required; your only formal commitment is to pay for each month’s tuition and/or every class for which your student is registered. However, as with any art form or sport, the more committed the student is, the more they will reap the benefits of their practice.
If schedule changes must occur, we ask that you inform us via email before the end of the previous month. Please note that refunds will be given only in exceptional circumstances.
